Democrats More Keen On Universal Health Care Than Republicans

January 24, 2008

According to a survey, twice as many Democrats as Republicans want to expand health insurance to include the uninsured. Opinions differ widely among Republicans and Democrats on what should be done to improve health care.

There are more and more uninsured Americans every year and health costs have grown astronomically. This has led to health care being an extremely important issue of the presidential election.

The Kaiser family foundation conducted the telephone survey of 508 likely Republican and 674 likely Democratic voters. The survey indicated the higher interest among Republicans in reducing health care costs and improving the quality of health care rather than providing insurance to the uninsured.

27 percent of Republicans wanted the status quo to remain on health care and 23 percent wanted a new system to include the uninsured even at the cost of a substantial increase in spending. 42 percent of Republicans wanted a plan which would include only some of those uninsured.

65 percent of Democrats wanted universal coverage even at an extra cost and only 22 percent wanted a scaled down approach with only 8 percent voting for a status quo. The margin of error of the survey was 4 percentage points.
