Obama said that health insurance reform was higher than national politics – it was about the well being of the American people. Reform would not only give the 46 million people who did not have insurance what they lacked but would also give security and stability to the insured.
The current system works better for the insurers than the insured. The health care reform will aim to make the insurance companies more accountable. Insurance companies will be required to cover both routine checkups and preventive care. Foot exams for diabetics as well as eye exams, colonoscopies and mammograms will be covered.
Doing this would actually lower costs in the long run by avoiding chronic illnesses. A person’s medical history should not be the basis for denial of insurance coverage. Talking on the subject, Obama said that his own mother had cancer and he could not forget her worry over whether her insurance claim would be rejected saying that the illness was a pre-existing condition.
