Should the uninsured lobby?
As a lobby there would be more members in a group of uninsured people than AARP. There are a considerably large number of them around. Health insurance or rather the lack of it is a choice for some, a personal issue and often a misfortune. When people lose health insurance their struggle is often a personal one, instead of one intended to spur political action.
During immigration debates, illegal immigrants have rallied in Washington, however the uninsured have shown a surprising lack of will. This may have very deep repercussions. Guaranteeing coverage for everyone will cost hundreds of billions of dollars and tough decisions.
Since the recession the number of uninsured has grown to touch 50 million. Health Care For America Now, the grassroots group has plans of bringing 15,000 people to Washington to lobby for guaranteed coverage this year. The reason the uninsured can not lobby is that they either have two-three jobs, are self employed and don’t have the time.
Sometimes the situation is grim, after a serious health issue, like a heart attack, you realize that no one wants to insure you. It can be a serious problem in old age. There is plenty of evidence that everyone should get covered immediately. However the politics of the issue is difficult to get by.
