Illegal Immigrants Not To Be Covered By Health Insurance Says Senator
The large group of undocumented immigrants would remain uncovered by the plan for universal health coverage. The cost for providing undocumented immigrants may not be directed to state and local governments. This has been put forth by the Senate Finance Committee chairman on Thursday.
Senator Baucus said at a meeting of reporters that it was too politically explosive to cover undocumented immigrants and workers. Universal health care has been set forth as a key health goal by this government. They aim to reach this goal by a mixture of incentives and mandates.
The U.S. Census Bureau and the Center for Immigration Studies say that between 15 and 22 percent of uninsured Americans are undocumented immigrants. Hospitals that treat many low income uninsured patients are provided some compensation. There will still be charity care, but there is no answer to undocumented workers and illegal aliens.
According to some advocates of immigration, health care would be incomplete if it did not include undocumented immigrants. They say that in the light of the flu pandemic issue, for any health care system to work, everyone has to be covered.
