Americans seem to be cutting down on health care costs to save money. Another symptom of a weakening economy. Whether the weakening economy helps or harms health is a matter of debate. When money is tight people give up cigarettes and slow down on drinks. This keeps them healthier.
The current slowdown in the American economy along with health care costs which have been rising for the last 5 years have had peculiar effects. According to a survery 22 percent Americans have reduced visits to the doctor and 11 percent have cut back on medication. Other groups have reported similar findings.
Ironically these events can result in higher insurance costs. In such situations preventive care plays a very important role. Avoiding tests and treatments in early stages of an illness may result in more illnesses later on. One solution is a nationwide focus on good health and wellness, which would not let the question of illness pop up in the first place.
